TITLE:
Symantec WinFax Pro Fax Viewer ActiveX Control Buffer Overflow
SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:
SA34925
VERIFY ADVISORY:
http://secunia.com/advisories/34925/
DESCRIPTION:
trotzkista has reported a vulnerability in Symantec WinFax Pro, which
can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system.
The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error in the
"AppendFax()" method provided by the Symantec.FaxViewerControl.1
ActiveX control (DCCFAXVW.DLL). This can be exploited to cause a
stack-based buffer overflow via an overly long argument passed to the
affected method.
Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code.
The vulnerability is reported in version 10.03. Other versions may
also be affected.
SOLUTION:
Set the kill-bit for the affected ActiveX control.
