TITLE:
Rising Antivirus Device Drivers IOCTL Handling Vulnerabilities
SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:
SA38335
VERIFY ADVISORY:
http://secunia.com/advisories/38335/
DESCRIPTION:
Some vulnerabilities have been reported in Rising Antivirus, which
can be exploited by malicious, local users to cause a DoS (Denial of
Service) or potentially gain escalated privileges.
The vulnerabilities are caused due to errors in the certain device
drivers (RsNTGdi.sys, HookCont.sys, HookNtos.sys, HOOKREG.sys, and
HookSys.sys) when processing IOCTLs. This can be exploited to corrupt
kernel memory and potentially execute arbitrary code in kernel space
via a specially crafted IOCTL.
The vulnerabilities are reported in Rising Antivirus 2008 and 2009.
SOLUTION:
Grant only trusted users access to an affected system.
Reportedly, the vendor has fixed some of the vulnerabilities by
restricting access to affected device drivers (HookCont.sys,
HookNtos.sys, HOOKREG.sys, and HookSys.sys).
